Online poker career: yes or no?

Online poker playing has become so popular it’s likely you know at least one friend who has tried (or succeeded) to make a career out of it. If you’re thinking about following their footsteps, you’ve got to realize that a online poker career isn’t as easy as it might seem, and most people who are making a living playing poker aren’t sharing the downsides of it with you. It’s still hard to resist the temptation of playing cards as a career and having to choose your own working hours while you earn some serious cash…Still, there are many downsides to this job. But, today we’re not gonna burst your bubble as we chose to show the good sides of a professional online poker career. We asked some professional online poker players to share their experience with us and give some advice to people who are trying to decide whether they would try and make a career out of it, and here’s some of the reasons they’re still in the job after so many stressful years…

You choose your own working hours

One of the best things about choosing online poker as a career is that you’re your own boss, which can be a good or a bad thing depending on how disciplined and responsible you are. There’s no more working from 9 to 5, but you have to keep a steady rhythm and eventually get some sort of working hours that suit you the most. Some people choose to play by day, some by night, and that’s an individual decision, but once you’ve found out when are you the most successful, it’s important to keep a schedule. The benefits of being your own boss mean getting to take a vacation or a couple of days off anytime you like, but keep in mind that you’ll have to work harder to make up for the time you weren’t playing.

Working from home

This is also a two sided blade which works great for some and not so great for others. Working from home means you can work in a relaxed atmosphere and take breaks whenever you wish to, “leaving home” sooner than you would if you worked at the office and so on. But this also brings a lot of temptations and distractions, such as TV, browsing the internet or playing video games. It goes the same as with the working hours – you need to be hard on yourself and stick to your schedule.

Doing what you like for a living

Not many people are lucky enough to get to do the job they actually like, and turning your hobby into a profession is the privilege of a very few lucky and brave people. We’re not saying there isn’t a chance that you will grow tired of online poker once you start doing it for a living, but at least you’d be doing the thing you like. Don’t pay attention to people trying to discourage you, as they might simply be jealous for not having the guts to follow their dreams.
